Objectives

Main objective

SMART4SEA aims to transform the Atlantic seafood sector by developing a cutting-edge environmental traceability system that integrates digital technologies, life cycle assessment (LCA) and consumer engagement. The project seeks to make seafood products more transparent, sustainable and trustworthy, while empowering fishers, industry, policymakers and consumers across the Atlantic Area to adopt circular and resource-efficient practices.

Specific objectives

1.

Improve data collection and traceability across the seafood value chain using IoT, edge computing and blockchain to ensure reliable, real-time information flows.

2.

Develop an environmental traceability framework that integrates digital traceability with LCA-based indicators to assess and communicate the environmental performance of seafood products.

3.

Reduce waste, emissions and marine pollution, including microplastics, through circular strategies and better resource management aligned with EU sustainability objectives.

4.

Strengthen cooperation among Atlantic regions—fishers, processors, research centres, public authorities and industry clusters—by promoting knowledge exchange and coordinated action.

5.
Empower consumers with accessible, trustworthy information through smart environmental labels (QR/NFC) that encourage sustainable consumption choices.
6.

Support policy alignment and innovation by engaging regulators, industry and civil society in the transition toward a fair, resilient and low-impact Blue Economy.
