The European project SMART4SEA has recently been featured in the Spanish fisheries magazine Ruta Pesquera, through an interview conducted with project partner ARVI-INNOVAPESCA. The article highlights SMART4SEA as a key initiative to improve environmental and social sustainability in the Atlantic seafood sector by means of innovative traceability and digital solutions.

In the interview, the discussion focused on the main objectives and scope of SMART4SEA, including the development of harmonised environmental traceability tools, the integration of life cycle assessment (LCA) indicators, and the use of digital technologies to enhance transparency across the seafood value chain. The article also underlines the importance of providing clear and reliable environmental information to both consumers and seafood companies, contributing to more informed decision-making and increased trust in seafood products.

The publication also presents SMART4SEA as a coordinated response to key challenges currently facing the fisheries sector, such as data fragmentation, waste management, plastic and microplastic pollution, and the need to adapt to more informed consumers and EU sustainability policies. Through its transnational consortium and strong involvement of industry partners, SMART4SEA aims to connect research, innovation and real-world practices, from fishing operations at sea to the final consumer.
